Principles of Human Services

CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Principles of Human Services course scope and sequence within the Human Services Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

Based on the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program, the Program of Studies within the Human Services Career Cluster provide helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. These documents are designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

In this lesson, students will demonstrate effective communication skills and brainstorm solutions to personal and workplace conflicts.

In this lesson, students will explain and practice responsible decision making consistent with personal needs, wants, values, and priorities.

In this lesson, students will identify, describe and evaluate strategies to respond to different types of family crises as well as differentiate between the types of family crises and ways to meet the needs of families. Students will also explain the effects of a crisis on individuals and families, develop a list of related family crisis resources available in the community, present their written report of family crisis scenarios information, and identify careers related to Counseling and Mental Health.

In this lesson, students will identify employment and entrepreneurial opportunities and preparation requirements in the areas of personal interest.

In this lesson, students will identify the basic developmental needs of children and understand guidelines which help parents maintain a healthy and safe environment for children. Students will also identify proper guidance methods and give examples for positive methods which could be utilized, recognize the causes, prevention and treatment of child abuse, investigate causes, prevention and treatment of domestic and relationship violence, and identify resources and agencies to help deter child abuse or domestic violence situations.

In this lesson, students will identify, describe and evaluate strategies to respond to different types of family crises as well as differentiate between the types of family crises and ways to meet the needs of families. In this lesson, students will investigate the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs of children ages one through five, review safety standards for child care facilities, and devise three days’ worth of activities that include different developmental strategies.

In this lesson, students will distinguish between various types of abuse and neglect, determine steps for reporting such acts, and analyze ways of breaking the cycle of abuse.  Students will create a three-dimensional diorama to include strategies to prevent child abuse.
