Practicum in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security

CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Practicum in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security course scope and sequence within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

Based on the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program, the Program of Studies within the Law, Public Services, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster provide helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. These documents are designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

In this lesson, students learn about the skills, workers in law, public safety, corrections, and security need to demonstrate in order to be successful in their jobs.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the professional dress and grooming standards expected in LPSCS careers.

In this lesson, students learn to understand health and safety in the workplace is essential in order to reduce injuries and illnesses. Such familiarity with policies and procedures can boost employee morale and productivity.

In this lesson, students will demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills, which will be used for workers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security. Students will participate in teamwork activities to understand the importance of communication and productivity in the workplace.

In this lesson, Students learn about the Interpersonal skills, that are important for workers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security, which they need to collaborate with others to accomplish goals and objectives.

In this lesson, students learn about expertise in communication skills, which is necessary for workers in law, public safety, corrections, and security in order to effectively relate to the public, peers, supervisors, clients, and inmates.

In this lesson, students are introduced to emerging technologies, that require employees of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, & Security services to continue acquiring the technical skills necessary to perform specific job objectives.

In this lesson, students will complete a training station orientation project for a career in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security. Students will outline details about the station, map out a plan and present to the class.

In this lesson, students will explore the O*NET website, complete a scavenger hunt, and complete a career research project.

In this lesson, students will create a portfolio. A benefit of using portfolios is to allow the students to engage in a self-reflection of their progress. The portfolio provides an alternative means of displaying skills and accomplishments.

In this lesson, students will explore career opportunities and options available in Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security.

In this lesson, students will apply concepts of personal development using the goal-setting concept to create short-term and long-terms goals in order to seek a career in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security.

In this lesson, students will learn project management techniques and utilize the Project Management Planning Process. Students will practice these skills as they work in teams to complete a Project Management activity.

In this lesson, students will create a scholarship portfolio for continued education in LPSCS. Students will research scholarships, create a resume, write essays, and obtain letters of recommendation.

Through this lesson, the student will be able to identify why officers patrol and how they prepare for patrol, discuss the different methods and patterns of patrols, analyze scenarios that a patrol officer could have an impact on through patrolling, and create proposals about how the problems in the scenarios could be addressed through patrols.
