CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Firefighter I course scope and sequence within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

Based on the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program, the Firefighter program of study within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster® provides helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. This document is designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

This lesson identifies the safety procedures, for ensuring a safe environment, structure fire and roadway emergency scene potential hazards. It also describes solutions to mitigate potential hazards and procedures for safe operation at emergency scenes.

In this lesson, students will discuss hazmat operations and placards, and respond appropriately to hazmat incidents in a scenario based activity. Students will identify the presence of hazardous materials (hazmat) or weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and know what their role is within the response plan.

In this lesson , students will discuss the operation and testing of fire safety devices, accountability systems, potential hazards, and safe operation at emergency scenes. 

In this lesson, students will become familiar with ventilation tools. Students will have the opportunity to complete independent research projects and presentations.

In this lesson, students will understand how to effectively perform forcible entry techniques used by fire personnel to gain entry into buildings, vehicles, aircraft, and other areas of confinement when normal means of entry are locked or blocked.

In this lesson, students will discuss and demonstrate skills associated with emergency power supplies and lighting for overall scene safety.

Fire department communications and their effectiveness are vital factors in the success or failure of fire service operations. Employees of a communications center need to have proper speech and radio etiquette, understand the importance of concise written communication, be well-versed in the Incident Command System (ICS) to manage emergencies, and be able to apply protocols in emergency management responses for all incidents. In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to discuss the importance of 911 communication centers and dispatch systems. Students will also discuss the roles and functions of various personnel, and apply emergency communications protocol in a mock incident activity.

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to explore the process of preparing for a fire service career by going through a mock hiring process and researching requirements.

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn methods for donning and doffing the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and to demonstrate how to don the SCBA.

In this lesson, students will explore the regulations and mission of the fire service. Students will develop their own mission statement for a fire department, and they will interview firefighters to gain perspectives from individuals in the service.

In this lesson, students will discuss hazmat operations and placards, and respond appropriately to hazmat incidents in a scenario based activity. Students will identify the presence of hazardous materials (hazmat) or weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and know what their role is within the response plan.

In this lesson, students will recognize when, how, and why accidents and injuries occur. Through scenario-based activities and individual and group exercises, students will have the opportunity to identify potential accidents and determine appropriate methods to respond to the issues that arise during the firefighting.

In this lesson , students will discuss the operation and testing of fire safety devices, accountability systems, potential hazards, and safe operation at emergency scenes. 

In this lesson, students will learn about utility service safety and demonstrate how to properly discontinue utility services.

In this lesson , students will discuss the operation and testing of fire safety devices, accountability systems, potential hazards, and safe operation at emergency scenes.

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to properly demonstrate how to check a door for heat and how to check the heat level in a room. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to assess characteristics of fires and determine potential safety issues in videos.

Understanding the extinguishing characteristics of water, and the efficiency in which it extinguishers fire, is important for understanding strategies in which it will be applied.  The primary way in which water extinguishes fire is by cooling (absorbing heat from the fire), but water can also be used to smother a fire by diluting or excluding oxygen. This happens as water vaporizes and is converted to steam. In this lesson, students will discuss the extinguishing properties of water and demonstrate proper extinguishing methods.

In this lesson, students will learn about the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), that allows firefighters to perform their duties in toxic environments. Students will also learn limitations of the SCBA, conduct an SCBA inspection, and replace a SCBA cylinder.

In this lesson, students will learn the about the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) used by firefighters. Students will also demonstrate and describe the "operational check" of a SCBA and a PASS device.

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn methods for donning and doffing the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and to demonstrate how to don the SCBA.

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate skills while wearing the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and procedures to follow in the event that the SCBA fails.

In this lesson, students will discuss firefighter training programs, expectations, and requirements. Additionally, students will research local fire department hiring requirements and Texas Firefighter Specialty Certifications that are of personal interest.

In this lesson, students will review the requirements to become a certified firefighter instructor, and they will prepare and deliver a 20-minute lesson from the Firefighter I curriculum.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500: Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program specifies the minimum safety requirements for the fire departments that provide rescue, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, special operations, and other emergency services. This lesson will allow students to explore the NFPA 1500: Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program through lecture and discussion, followed by a role-playing group project.

In this lesson, students will explore the career opportunities associated with Fire Protection, and research the job responsibilities in the public and private sectors, such as the military, state, and federal governments.

In this lesson, students will explore the regulations and mission of the fire service. Students will develop their own mission statement for a fire department, and they will interview firefighters to gain perspectives from individuals in the service.

In this lesson, students will explore the components of a Members Assistance Program (MAP), and have the opportunity to discover how these programs resolve some of the issues faced by firefighters.
